Holt Bed and Breakfast

Holt the pretty North Norfolk Georgian town is a great choice for a B&B break in North Norfolk. Holt Bed and Breakfast provide all the benefits you would expect from a B&B stay the warm welcome and more intimate nature of the accommodation as there are less rooms and guests. You also get B&B hosts with in depth local knowledge and can be assured of an excellent breakfast each morning home cooked to order and made with fresh local ingredients.

Holt did massively well out of the late 1990′s and early 2000′s second home boom when North Norfolk was the focus of  wealthy city workers looking to invest in a second property as a holiday home or to let as a holiday cottage. this was a double edged sword for Holt as the character and economic balance of the town changed forever. The lovely Georgian streets and stone cottages were a honey pot of potential properties. As the largely agrarian market town changed into something new.

There is no doubt that the property boom made it hard for local residents to buy property in the area and helped cause local migration. But the inwards investment has brought money into the local economy in new areas.  Just look at the burgeoning antiques trade in the town, the growth in the number of local boutiques and art galleries along the high street and the new bars and restaurants all have helped to create new jobs.

Put this to one side as you come to Holt for a Bed and Breakfast break or holiday. positioned only a short drive to the cost road links along the A148 to Sheringham and Cromer, a direct route into Norwich and access to the best spots on the North Norfolk coast like Blakeney and Holkham all serve to make Holt a great place to take a B&B break in North Norfolk.

Holt Proper revolves around a market place and the following High street. The High street runs in an Arc east to west between the A148 .  Starting at the Western end from Obelisk plain where you can see the impressive Holt Methodist church. Head east past Webb’s  County Jewllers  on your left and Nicholsons clothing boutique on the right. Next to Webb’s you can find Richard Scotts antiques one of the many antiques dealers in Holt.

Next to Bakers and larner’s of Holt  you can find a Georgian alley way leading to et more shops and parts of the town. The alleys and run through’s are are part of  Holt’s charm as the basic street layout has been upgraded but not changed much since the town was redeveloped in Georgian time after a cataclysmic fire destroyed much of the town.

Next you can find the Kings head pub a lovely refurbished gastro pub offering an excellent steak menu and well finished  guest rooms.  At the junction with Shirehall plain you can find local estate agents  clustered together if you are interested in finding out more about property in Holt.

On Shirehall proper you can find Byfords a contemporary B&B with an excellent reputation housed in what is thought to be the oldest building in Holt with a cellar dating back to the 15th century.

Continue west for  50m to see the market place proper though no loger home to a market it is still the central hub of Holt.  You can find Bed and Breakfast in Holt for £60- £90 per night. outside of holt you can stay in The old forge complex a few miles away in quiet Thursford not only a B&B provider Sarah and her husband run the nearby award winning Old forge seafood restaurant too.

Fakenham town is a bustling place with many local cafes shops and pubs for you to explore during your stay.
Just  off the Market square on Bridge street you can finde Keane’s restaurant for a bite to eat, next door Benbows traditional fruit and veg shop. away from the main square you can find Q’s coffee shop and bistro on Quaker lane. A pretty bistro in a traditional brick building.

The bull Public house sits just  below Keane’s on Bridge Street  and is a good place to stop for food in the evening in the beer garden during the summer months. As a supporter of CAMARA  the Campaign for real ales you can find some excellent local beers from Norfolk Breweries.

Out of Fakenham head north to the impressive Holkham Hall and it’s estate which is managed by the National trust. This very impressive stately home was built by Thomas Coke who pioneered many modern agricultural techniques. In order to contorol land erosion the estate is borderd on it’s north edge by pine woods which run all the way up to the beautiful sandy Beach at Holkahm.  You can reach Holkham from Fakenham  via the B1105 which leads to the lovely village of Wells-Next-the-Sea.

Gooderstone Water Gardens a North Norfolk attraction

When spending time in North Norfolk, one attraction definitely worth visiting are the Gooderstone Water Gardens .

These amazing gardens have been a project of love since 2003 for owner Coral Hoyos who lovingly restored them. Coroal’s father came up with the idea of the gardens in 1970 and sketched out plans on the back of a piece of wall paper.

Since that time the gardens have become a haven for wildlife and you can see the Nesting Kingfishers feeding from the ponds.  Popular with artists and wildlife photographers alike Gooderstone Water Gardens  have become an important wildlife haven in North Norfolk.  To reach the gardens travel wes from Norwich along the A47 towards Swaffham and follow the road on and you will see the road signs to Gooderstone near the village of Oxborough.

Why I love North Norfolk Bed and Breakfast’s

My parents contacted me recently they wanted to come to Norfolk to house hunt. Nearing retirement they are looking for that cosy cottage to enjoy their time in. They wanted to find a place with lots of natural beauty and places for them to visit.

Not surprisingly North Norfolk made it to the top of the short list alongside their Beloved Yorkshire.
Having lived in Norfolk many years ago they specifically wanted to check out North Norfolk and after choosing their locations decided to book into two different Bed and Breakfasts so that they could expand their search and arrange viewings. traveling along the A149 they made viewing appointments and arrived in Norfolk.

They were bowled over with the quality of their bed and breakfast accommodation one was near Sheringham and the other further to the west near the village of Cley. In both locations they loved the friendliness of their welcome and the quality of the rooms and especially the quality of the cooked breakfasts.

Doubtless to say while they did not find a suitable house i have a feel they could well be appearing in a North Norfolk Bed and breakfast near you soon.
