Hire a Boat on the Norfolk & Suffolk Broads

In recent posts you will have been well aware of our push for boating holidays on the broads…

Today I was struck as the sun came out this morning truly bathing the green swathes of Norfolk in amazing shades and different hues.

You see the secret of  Norfolk & Suffolk is not that we have the most breath taking scenery see the Lakes, see Yorkshire, see Scotland and Wales. What makes the Norfolk experience so great what stands our holidays apart from all parts of the country is I suspect the ability of the place to swallow you whole and emerse you in a sun drenched landscape which may only be 30 mins away from the nearest city or town. But feels like it is the other side of world.

You see once you have stayed under those endless blue skies and slowly floated along a broad or river, all the complications of life can be left behind. Your time is your own so you set the pace and the agenda.

Like many other  who have lived in the region for some time I have learned the secret of the place is take your time and let no one rush you. On the broads you are a million miles from stress.

So think about boating this year, as a couple, as a family or a group of friends…

Talk to Colin Sanderson for boat hire and visit the directory for listings on what to do and see.

Fine Seafood In North Norfolk

The Old Forge”
Recommended as ‘a must’ by food critics in East Anglia

Colin and Sarah were featured twice on BBC1 National Television News demonstrating seafood dishes.

The Old Forge is a 14th Century former coaching station with forge and is steeped in history. It was a resting place for pilgrims journeying to nearby Walsingham Abbey and has a figurine placed on the wall which is a sign that the building has been blessed spiritually. It is mentioned in Chaucer’s “A Pilgrim’s Progress”.

The Old Forge has been completely refurbished and taken back to its original style of York Stone floors and bar, beams and a warm welcoming atmosphere. The original iron hooks are still in the restaurant where the horses were tied ready to be shod.

Colin and Sarah, his wife, are both experienced in the field of first class accommodation and cuisine. Colin, the chef proprietor, trained in France and has worked in Inn on the Park and Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
Fresh seafood is the speciality and Colin has invented many of his own dishes which are immensely popular with local regulars who dine at the restaurant. Simple touches such as using the exquisite shrimps from The Wash topped on succulent pieces of fish make such a difference to food. Local crayfish tails cooked with different spices, many of which are grown in the garden and lobster cooked in its own juices are a must. Lobster, crabs and oysters are purchased daily from the infamous fishermen on the coast at Blakeney and Wells next the Sea and prepared with many of Colin’s secret recipes.

Local sirloin steak is also on the menu but the emphasis is on seafood. If you don’t feel fishy we would be delighted to discuss another menu in advance of your booking. We do not like to exclude anyone including children.
There is a special pre-theatre menu on offer for the Thursford Christmas Spectacular and special B&B Rates.

Norfolk Broads Boat Hire holidays

The Norfolk Broads represent much more than a fad in British holiday tastes. These beautiful and tranquil boating byways have a strong emotional link with all who travel on them.
People do not often realise the depth of history that many of of the boat hire companies have in the area.
The story of one such company can be traced through it’s family generations from present day back to the 1920′s.
Nestled on the North bank of the river Yare in the pretty village of Reedham. Sanderson Marine Craft Ltd is operated by Colin Sanderson who has many memories of time spent with his grandfather and father in the family business.

HJW Sanderson (Bert) left the Royal Flying Corps in 1918, moving to Norfolk he created a boat hire business on the Broads. Bert alongside his son Tony designed and built much of their small early fleet.

The outbreak of the second world war understandably stopped the business and through the 1950′s and 1960′s the family undertook a lot of private work. By the time Colin joined the business in the 1970′s the hire fleet had expanded to fourteen boats again lovingly built by the family.

Colin and brother Stephen worked alongside their father Tony gradually, Tony would take a lesser role in the business and in 1993 when Stephen left the firm to pursue individual interests Colin was in sole charge.

Today Colin his partner Liz and their two sons  Jon and Ron continue the proud tradition of boat hire on the Norfolk Broads.

You can contact Colin and the family at Sanderson Marine Craft Ltd., Riverside, Reedham, Norwich NR13 3TE.
