Ireland - Portumna Cruising Area

Emerald green is indeed the colour of Ireland and its beautiful, beguiling countryside. You cannot fail to be impressed by the wild landscapes, silvery waters and magical charm of Ireland which is indeed a golfer’s paradise, an angler’s dream and a sailor’s delight.

Our base at Portumna is located at the northern tip of Lough Derg – a vast lake nestling in the midst of a green and lush landscape. As you head southwards to the small sailing harbour of Killaloe at the tip of the lake, the pretty villages of Terryglass, Dromineer, Garrykennedy and Mountshannon all provide easy moorings.

Take time to enjoy the peaceful waters of the Lower Shannon and Lough Ree as you cruise northwards towards the dynamic county town of Athlone, or further afield, Roosky. En route be sure to stop and visit Clonmacnois, the greatest monastic settlement of medieval Ireland, founded in AD 545.

At the end of the day you will find a warm and friendly atmosphere in the traditional Irish pubs that line your route. Here, to the sounds of traditional Irish ballads, why not try a hearty lamb stew or fresh salmon from the lake, washed down with a pint of velvety black Guinness or a tipple of Irish Whiskey – famous for its peat-rich colour and flavour. Maybe then you will have found the magical charm of this beautiful country!
